Acute pain typically has a rapid onset and is the result of physical trauma such as postoperative pain, strains, broken bones, burns, or childbirth. The benefits of effective pain management include, among others, reduced hospital/physician visits, earlier hospital discharges, reduced disability/lost work claims and increased productivity, not to mention improved quality of life. All of these factors serve to decrease financial burden on the healthcare system. As with inflammatory pain, the most common treatment for acute pain is the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
